+The submarine had stopped just outside the event horizon. The barrier between the unending possibilities of the outside world and the fivefold (maybe sixfold if he was lucky) causal loop of the Island was visible, a shimmering rainbow mirage. On the edge of it lay the vehicle, powered down. Its prow pointed towards the barrier and it looked as though it had intended to leave. Bestial screams and the ring of steel told him of a battle. He recognised that scream. It was primal, something he might expect to hear when running through a prehistoric forest a few seconds before a dinosaur ate him.
 +//Bilan.//
 +
+He prayed to whichever deity, if any, existed inside the Parallels - the Yama of his own personal Samsara – that the same rules applied to the submarine that bound him to the boat. There wasn't time to experiment. Whatever his fate if he broke those rules, it would be nothing compared to what  could very well be the end result of the battle in that submarine.
 +
+He jumped into the ocean. It wasn't swimming so much as walking through a slightly less restrictive kind of wall. The submarine rippled into view and he dove through the porthole, not noticing or caring that it was closed.
 +
+The inside of the vessel had been trashed. Doors were torn off their hinges, control panels smashed and their wires ripped out, deep rents gouged into the metal walls. Glowing green acidic slime left a slug-trail for Garian to follow. He heard the cry of a woman deep in battle-fury, her weapon striking again and again on Bilan's chitinous hide. Some blows landed, cracking bone and causing Bilan to scream in anger and pain. In response, the monster sliced with its claws and mandibles or spat acid.
 +
+He wanted to cry out but he knew that it would achieve nothing except causing the woman to lose her concentration in the middle of battle. Instead, he moved in for a closer look. His plan was to wait, observe the tide of the battle carefully and distract Bilan at the most opportune moment. It would be a bonus if he found out what the hell had happened.
 +
+What he saw in that room chilled his spirit to the core.
 +
+It was Tracy. In each hand she held a long-handled Kris knife carved into the shape of a snake. She struck at Bilan, then jumped out of the way of his next counter-attack, a lifetime of elite ninja training displayed in her unnerving speed and accuracy, her movements more like acrobatics than warfare. The look in her eyes was more than just concentration – the darkness in that stare was as deep and terrible as the ocean floor. She could see not just the enemy before her but the nightmare that lay at the heart of destiny, waiting for one wrong move. It was that same oblivion that waited for him to fall off the bottom of the wheel of reincarnation.
 +
+He wasn't sure which combatant he feared more.
 +
 +//Bilan,// he called, //just don't. Please. Just don't.
 +//
 +
+For a split second, just long enough for Bilan to be able to ward off Tracy's next flurry of attacks  with his whirling mandibles, unnaturally flexible, as he fixed the invisible stranger a plaintive look. //But its the way out...//
 +
+//Its not the right way out. You don't remember, but if you do that, something terrible will happen.
 +//
 +
+//But what about the endings that all turn out bad for me? Its okay for me to always see my dreams ruined? Apotheosis taken from me by death?//
 +
 +//
+This is much worse than death. There'll be nothing left and you won't have another chance. At least there's always one more chance for us, right? And your destiny lies in the other direction. On Mount Mejourna.//
 +
 +//
+Yes, it does. The Climax. But I don't reach my Climax. Not this time. He's about to reach His, though. When He does, you'll wish you let me leave and saved yourself. Oblivion is coming for you whether or not it comes at my hand, Tracy's or His. He'll reach His Climax by climbing over your worm-eaten corpses.//
 +
 +//Bilan?//
 +
 +//Yes?//
 +
+//You want to reach your Climax? I know where you can. The only place you can.
 +//
 +
 +//You do?//
 +
+//Let me lead you there. I can't go there but I can lead you in the right direction.//
 +
 +//You won't kill me again?//
 +
 +//Like I said, I can't go there. This is a Parallel where I'm already dead.//
 +
 +//And what about Him?//
 +
+//I don't for sure, but if you get there in time, if you reach your Climax, you might be able to find the strength to beat Him. He'll be weak. There won't be anything for Him to feed on.//
 +
+Bilan stopped mid-strike. Slapping the ninja's blades away with a quick swing of his claw, he grabbed her by the hem of her shirt using both sets of claws, then threw her out of the way. He turned in the opposite direction and slithered down the corridor.
 +
+//Don't worry//, he called to Tracy, He's retreating. I'm taking him back with me.
 +
+//I saw what you did. Are you really going to surrender an entire world to your enemy?// She glared at him.
 +
+//To save every world from a worse fate, yes.//
 +
+//And I thought my soul had grown dark...//
 +
+//Its no worse than handing a world to you. At least he's not going to trap his own causal arc in a space the proportional size of the cupboard in the Lavian Ruins, the same as you trap yourself there.//
 +
+//You have no idea what lengths I go to protect this Universe from my own fate. You let yours run wild.//
 +
 +//Not any more. I'm fixing it now.//
 +
+//Garian... do you have any idea what happened in that last fight?//
 +
 +//No//, he admitted.
 +
+//That was Kay//, she told him, //My sister. You were so busy running around trying to kill yourselves that you completely forgot about my sister.//
 +
 +//But I saw Kay...//
 +
+//Near the end. When she had already been absorbed by Bilan. When Bilan was wearing her face in order to get off the Island. And now Bilan's gone off to wherever it is you told him to go, I won't have the chance to save her.//
 +
 +//Oh God... I'm sorry...
 +//
 +
+//Don't pity me. I've seen worse, I'm going to see worse still and all I'll be able to do is contain it. Garian... just go away before I decide to hit the accelerator and just keep on going. And Garian...//
 +
 +//Yes?//
 +
+//We all reach our Climax. Fear the day when it happens to me.//
